Valentine’s Update (and my new hair!)

February 15th, 2010 § 3 Comments

We had a lovely Valentine’s Day yesterday…hope you did too!

Well, full disclosure–we woke up yesterday morning in a fight, which was torture as I made Drew’s Valentine and tried to think of something lovey and true when all I could feel was the fact that we were not okay. I ended up with a somewhat depressing but longhaul-themed card, to the tune of “I’m not happy with you right now but I will always be here for you and I love you very much.” Yeah. But luckily Drew found me scrubbing the kitchen sink and doing a load of laundry when he woke up (a sure sign that I am…pissed) and we had a nice talk and made up. Hooray!

We spent most of the day watching the Olympics, playing with the dog, etc. and then Drew read his basketball book while Goliath and I took a nap. Around four five I decided I should start the beef bourguignon, so I got to work. I sauteed the bacon, browned the beef, sauteed the onion and carrot, and put it all in the pot with herbs and wine and stock. And then into the oven. By this time it was nearly 6 o’clock, and then I read that the stew should simmer for 3-4 hours. Hmmm. Eat dinner at 10 o’clock when I was nearly passed out and ready to go to bed, or save the beef for tomorrow (today) and go out instead? We chose option B. Drew took us to kora, a new italian place near us I’ve been dying to try. Drew had the roast chicken with bacon and cheese macaroni and some sort of green sauce. I had seared sea bass and saffron orzo and asparagus. Both were quite tasty! And Drew decided that he may like white fish after all, so I am very excited about the possibility of making some at home soon :) Oh, and he REALLY liked the herb ciabatta they had to start, so I think I’ll have to go back and make that for him since I was in PA when I first made it. We were going to get dessert but the waiter took a lifetime to check on us, and in the meantime we decided we were more in the mood for Coldstone, so we walked over there instead. We got back to the apartment with 11 minutes to spare on the timer for the beef–just enough to take out the dog and have a short singalong with matching fantastic dance moves to “Come on Get Higher” (on repeat, since I only know the chorus). We were interrupted, however, by a friendly neighbor who asked, when we were done goofing off, could we tell her if she could park along the service road? Sorry lady, goofing off is how we roll, but yes, you can park on the service road. We giggled to ourselves as we made it back to our apartment, where we snuggled in to eat our ice cream watch Julie & Julia (chosen to educate Drew on beef bourguignon, as earlier that day he had never heard of it before), during which, inevitably, I fell asleep…somewhere around the 3/4 mark. But it was quite good and a happy day for us, and in the end that’s all that matters.

I did manage to get Drew to take a picture!

And happy day, beef bourguignon for dinner tonight :)

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hope everyone’s day is filled with lots of love and laughter. This morning Drew and I had pancakes and sausage, and later I’m making beef bourguignon. Do you like how closely love resembles food in our house? Hmmm. :)

Oh! And I got my hair cut. Didn’t get it colored because I blanched at the prices online after I had made an appointment. Still deciding whether to keep my normal color or dye it myself at home…we’ll see. Maybe I’ll make Gloria help me tomorrow evening. We’ll see.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

BUT just discovered that in fact I do NOT have to meet with our marketing client this afternoon, which means I’m not totally screwed and will hopefully have enough time to grade the midterms…that is after I take my own! Wish me luck on Revenue Management this morning. Hopefully it won’t be too bad…

Also, if I haven’t talked to you recently, Drew and I are back on for our interviews next week! Hooray!!! Hopefully they will go well…I can’t even imagine how relieved I’d be if this whole process could be OVER! But I do feel very lucky to be seeing my sweetie again so soon :) Oh! And in honor of Valentine’s Day, I share my favorite love print!

Ay Ay Ay

I’ve been thinking about this post for 3 or 4 days now, and I still don’t know what to say. I am so tired, so tired of all of it. I can’t take any more…I don’t want to deal with anything else. Radar died last night. Michael and I were sitting on the couch watching the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge with him, and all of the sudden his mouth started twitching and drooling a lot and then started having a whole-body seizure. We took him to the emergency clinic, where they did a chest x-ray and found his lungs full of cancer.  The vet said it was a black and white case, that we should put him down and not prolong his suffering. He had had another seizure in the back when they were doing the x-ray and they had treated it with valium. He was so tired and sloppy when they brought him out for us to say goodbye…there was still a lot for him to smell so he circled around trying to do that before lying down in between us all. Then the vet came in and did the euthanasia and he died still lying in between us. We had just gotten home after 4 days of hell last night…we think he had at least one seizure while we weren’t there, because there was a lot of drool on the floor…I am glad we made it home for all of us to be there, but gosh it was just like not today after everything this break. I’m sure he’s in a better place now, and he doesn’t hurt quite so much. I don’t want to go back to Chicago. Mom is just a wreck and these next two weeks are going to be awful too. I don’t want her to have to bear it alone but Todd and I both have finals and crap to do before we come home again for Christmas break. I hope they just go as quickly as possible, and then we can deal with everything else when we get back. I really do hope Grandma and Poppa are still planning on spending Christmas with us–we really need their support. We’ve been texting them everything that’s been going on this week and I think they are as worried as we are about everything…we’re trying to rely on God and remember that he is sovereign over everything and everyone, and that he protects his people. It is hard to believe while all of this is going on, but we have no other choice. Hopefully today is a better day.
